About the trail

The Wairoa Township River Walkway winds along the banks of the river from the historic lighthouse in the town centre, passing the famous lookout point on Pilot's Hill, finishing at Whakamahia Beach. In the few years since the walkway was started, it has become a mainstay in the recreational activities of both residents and visitors alike.

The pathway is a concrete and gravel path beside Marine Parade, Kopu Road, Whakamahia Road, and Whakamahia Lagoon Road. It is mostly flat, but with a rise over Pilot Hill. It follows Te Wairoa Hōpūpū Hōngenengene Mātangi Rau (the long, bubbling, swirling, uneven waters)/Wairoa River and takes you to Whakamahia Beach past lagoons and a tidal flats (a nature reserve). Whakamahia Beach is unique with its black sand and driftwood.

The Wairoa area, especially along the river and coastline, was densely populated before settlers arrived and has a rich Māori history, including five pā sites. Many of the sites noted along the walkway are recorded with historic plaques.

At low tide you are likely to see wading birds along the river margins and in the estuary. For history and more information visit Wairoa District Council Wairoa Riverside Pathway

If you would like additional information we recommend you visit the Wairoa Museum.
