Tapuaeroa Road gives access to Hikurangi Maunga. A section of the road 16.5km up the road is currently four-wheel drive only where river deposits have raised the river level up to the level of the road. The Hikurangi Maunga track is not accessible after rain.
The Gisborne District Council is working to provide a solution, and anticipate that the repair may be started during the coming year.
Water has scoured the off-road steep section of the track on the Mātokitoki Valley side. If you are cycling, take care and maybe walk this small section.
Several walkways are closed during lambing season.
Public access to Mount Hikurangi is closed from 12 noon on 31 December to 12 noon on 1 January each year for the Hikurangi Maunga Dawn Event.
Tūranga Gardens, enclosing the Elizabeth Williams Walkway, is currently closed. Two slips have exposed some old asbestos waste from the demolition of Cook Hospital and GDC has closed the reserve because of this safety concern.
