Seasonal restrictions - the closure period for the lambing season varies with the DoC Walkways (Cooks Cove, Te Kurī Farm, Anaura Bay, and Otoko) being closed each year from 1 August until the start of Labour Weekend (late October), while Te Aratia Walkway is closed from July and reopens late September, and Mapiri Walkway is closed from July and reopens late October.
There is a small slip across the track on the Mātokitoki Valley side of the track. It is easy to walk across, and you can walk your bike across it, although this is awkward with the tree branches.
Public access to Mount Hikurangi is closed from 12 noon on 31 December to 12 noon on 1 January each year for the Hikurangi Maunga Dawn Event.
The track from the Pakihiroa Station carpark to the hut will be closed every October for lambing.
Tūranga Gardens, enclosing the Elizabeth Williams Walkway, is currently closed. Two slips have exposed some old asbestos waste from the demolition of Cook Hospital and GDC has closed the reserve because of this safety concern.
