Trust Tairāwhiti

Trust Tairāwhiti is the regional community trust for Te Tairāwhiti, with a strategic focus on economic development, community initiatives and investments that support the wellbeing of our people and place. 

The community trust is also the regional Economic Development Agency and Regional Tourism Organisation under a funding partnership with Gisborne District Council.

Trust Tairāwhiti provided funding towards employing a trails manager for two years, developing Tairāwhiti Trails' logo, brand and signage, and preparing feasibility studies for recreational cycling and walking on Arai Matawai and Ruatorea Māori-held land blocks.

The community trust supported Motu Trails Charitable Trust to complete the Coastal Waipaoa River Trail and to develop the visitor experience of the Rere Falls Trail. It also supportsTe Wero ia Wenerei (Wednesday Challenge) for schools in 2024.

Gisborne District Council

Tapuwae Tairāwhiti Trails has a working relationship with Gisborne District Council, our territorial authority and a unitary council. Council staff value the input of Tapuwae Tairāwhiti Trails trustees on matters of mutual interest, e.g. active travel, mode shift, infrastructure to encourage active travel, access along unformed legal roads, and regional trails signage.

Tapuwae Tairāwhiti Trails has an MOU in development with GDC, to progress Te Ara o Taruheru. Trustees also contribute to regional plans and strategies.

Herenga ā Nuku

Herenga ā Nuku Aotearoa, the Outdoor Access Commission, was previously known as the NZ Walking Access Commission. 

Regional advisor Dot Dalziel supported Tapuwae Tairāwhiti Trails to deliver a hui in February 2021 to begin the discussion about a regional strategy for track and trails in te Tairāwhiti.  Community hui throughout the region were to follow but did not eventuate because of covid 19 concerns. Dot continues to be appreciated as an advisor particularly regarding Te Ara Tipuna and the use of unformed legal roads as opportunities for trails.

Herenga ā Nuku supported Tapuwae Tairāwhiti Trails by part-funding a trails manager role for 10 hours a week, between July 2021 and March 2023.

Motu Trails Charitable Trust

Motu Trails Charitable Trust is the governance and operational hub of Motu Trails, a Great Ride of Nga Haerenga, the New Zealand Cycle Trails.

The trust's team promotes and manages the trails. Its vision is for Motu Trails to be a gateway to positive experiences for all ages and abilities, visitors and locals alike, ultimately benefiting the communities around the trails — Gisborne to Ōpōtiki.

Motu Trails include the Dunes Trail, Pakihi Track, Motu Road Trail, and Rere Falls Trail.

The Rere Falls Trail connects Opotiki and the Bay of Plenty with Tūranganui a Kiwa. 

Motu Trails Charitable Trust and Tapuwae Tairāwhiti Trails Trust worked with Gisborne District Council in 2022 on the creation of the Coastal Waipaoa River Trail.

CCS Disability Action Tairāwhiti

CCS Disability Action is the largest disability support and advocacy organisation in Aotearoa New Zealand. It supports people with all types of impairments and has been working alongside disabled people since 1935. 

The group is at the forefront of service provision, advocacy and information sharing in the disability sector. It partners with disabled people, their families and whānau to enable them to have choice and control in their lives. Its vision is to see every disabled person and whānau hauā interwoven into the lives of their whānau and community.

Whiti Ora Tairāwhiti

Whiti Ora Tairāwhiti delivers and supports sport, play and active recreation throughout the region, as well as providing health and lifestyle programmes from Quarter Marathons and sports club development, to healthy eating workshops and early childhood physical education.

With sport a valuable vehicle for social change, Whiti Ora Tairāwhiti is on a mission to expand horizons for an active, healthy and connected Te Tairāwhiti.

 

Bike Taupō

Bike Taupo has built tracks and provided community representation for all Taupo cyclists since 2002. 

Its members use bikes for transport, pleasure and to stay healthy. Bike Taupo aims to support cyclists in every way, all the time.

Bike Taupō has supported Tapuwae Tairāwhiti Trails in getting to where it is today through encouragement, and sharing documents and experience.

Cycling Action Network

Cycling Action Network (CAN) is the national voice for people on bicycles in New Zealand.

It links local cycling action groups, partners and supporting organisations with a passion to:

  • promote integrated cycle planning
  • promote the benefits of cycling
  • improve safety
  • encourage the creation of a good cycling environment
  • develop cycle advocacy and cycle action.

CAN has been New Zealand's network of cycling advocate groups since 1997, providing a national voice for everyday people on bicycles - recreational, commuter and touring. CAN works with government, councils, businesses and individuals, and welcomes your involvement.

Living Streets Aotearoa

Living Streets Aotearoa is the New Zealand organisation for people on foot, promoting walking-friendly communities. A nationwide organisation, it has local branches and affiliates throughout New Zealand.

It wants more people walking and enjoying public spaces be they young or old, fast or slow, whether walking, sitting, commuting, shopping, between appointments, or out on the streets for exercise, for leisure or for pleasure.

Tairāwhiti Gisborne - the first light

Trust Tairāwhiti is the regional Economic Development Agency and Regional Tourism Organisation under a funding partnership with Gisborne District Council. The tourism brand is Tairāwhiti Gisborne - the first light. The regional tourism operators have joined together under this brand to reach out to visitors and residents. The i-site in Grey Street is the place where visitors can collect information and leaflets about everything to do with regional tourism. 

Tapuwae Tairāwhiti Trails appreciates Tairāwhiti Gisborne sharing this tracks and trails website through the i-site and the regional tourism website.

Cycle Gisborne

Cycle Gisborne offers a selection of day and multi-day tours, and well-maintained manual and electric hire bikes. Explore the city on your own or take a guided tour of the city and waterfront.

My Ride Gisborne is on the Roebuck/Gladstone Road corner, where a bike shop has been located since the 1940s.

Heritage Tairāwhiti

Heritage Tairāwhiti tells stories of people and place as it works to preserve and enhance understanding of heritage in the Tairawhiti region.

Its volunteers educate, advocate, provide heritage experiences and create publications and signage about the district's history and heritage. Its main focus is tours including domestic, commercial and industrial buildings and architecture; railway history; pa sites and marae; churches and cemeteries.

Sunrise Foundation

  • Raises funds from donations and legacies
  • Invests the funds retaining the capital and generating income
  • Uses the income from investments to provide grants for charitable causes in Tairāwhiti-Gisborne (the area covered by Gisborne District Council)

The Sunrise Foundation supported Tapuwae Tairāwhiti Trails Trust with a grant of $2,500 in 2021.

NZ Community Trust

The New Zealand Community Trust, established in 1998, is one of New Zealand's largest gaming trusts with 13% of market share. NZCT is proud of the contribution they make to local communities, particularly in amateur sport and active participation.

100% of the profit from gaming machines at NZCT venues is distributed to worthy causes.

In 2021, NZCT granted $10,000 to Tapuwae Tairāwhiti Trails towards employing a trails manager.

Eastern & Central Community Trust

Eastern and Central Community Trust (ECCT) provides grants and support to community organisations in the Gisborne/Tairāwhiti, Hawkes Bay, Tararua, Wairarapa, Manawatu and Horowhenua regions.

In 2020, ECCT granted Tapuwae Tairāwhiti Trails $5,000 towards employing a trails manager.
