About the trail

The valley track to Little Manganuku Stream begins at the historic Manganuku Bridge beside Manganuku Campsite, then climbs over a saddle before descending to the stream. You will walk beneath tall forest, cross a small stream, and ascend to a saddle with good views. The track then drops down to the Little Manganuku Stream, an attractive fast flowing stream, with toetoe, ferns, and small trees growing on the stream terraces.

Little Manganuku Stream Track

History of the trail

Manganuku Stream Bridge - Built in 1928 the bridge is a Public Works Department standard design, single-lane, single-span truss road bridge built of Australian hardwood.  This bridge formed part of SH2 through the Waioweka Gorge until 1964 when it was replaced by the current concrete bridge. The Manganuku Stream Bridge is of great significance as a representative and rare survivor of a typical New Zealand wood truss road bridge. It is in good condition with high integrity. The bridge has a modified Howe truss span of 24.8 metres and one 9.5 metre land span of rolled steel joists. The deck is 4.7 metres wide. Near the right bank a concrete pier supports the truss and land span.

Tips & Logistics

Park at the Manganuku Campsite and walk over the historic Manganuku Bridge. The Little Manganuku Stream Track starts across the old road with steps leading up a bank. Follow a rough track through a shrubby area of blackberry and regenerating bush, which will lead you into the forest and the valley track. The walk to the saddle above Little Manganuku Stream will take about 1 hour, then the rough track down to the stream will take about 30 minutes, at an easy pace.
