This tramping track to Koranga Forks Hut, at the junction of the Koranga River and Kahanui Stream, was historically an easy four-hour family bush walk, offering attractive places to swim, a swing bridge, and plenty of camping near the hut.
However, the track has become more challenging as weather events caused slips across the track. DoC staff continue to maintain the hut and track during annual visits. This track is still a good option for families with more capable children, but good balance and confidence crossing narrow ledges across slips, as well as scrambling over slippery rocks, is needed. The track to Koranga Forks Hut can be a "there-and-back" day trip for fit walkers, an easy overnight trip, or part of the two-to-three-day Tawa Hut to Koranga Forks Hut circuit. Between Koranga Forks Hut and Tawa Hut the track is mostly in the river so this trip should only be planned by people with a good level of back country experience and only during low river levels. Historic Kahanui Hut can be accessed from Tawa Hut, again following the Kahanui Stream. These huts are basic DoC huts, which do not need to be booked. Hut tickets can be purchased from the Gisborne i-site or Kathmandu.
The track begins at the end of Moanui Road, off Te Wera Road. Turn off Matawai Road/SH2 on to Te Wera Road at the Motu River Bridge. Extra care is needed driving on Moanui Road, a mostly single lane gravel road with many tight corners.
Be aware that this area is popular with hunters. Wear bright clothing for hiking.
Before you go, buy one Standard Hut Ticket for each night's stay.
Note the hut ticket number in the hut book.
Or buy a Backcountry Hut Pass that gives unlimited use at most Standard and Serviced huts for 12 months.
