History of the trail

Warwick and Jane Tombleson have been farming Aerial Station since 1982, and Warwick earlier than that. In 2007, they bought part of Haurata Station. For Jane, sharing this amazing landscape with visitors is something she has always enjoyed doing and Haurata High Country Walks developed from this. She has marked three walks over the farms, each of which have interesting features, including the significant Ngatapa Maunga where Ringatu leader Te Kooti had his last stand against the English Constabulary and Ropata before he escaped over the cliffs and into Te Urewera in 1869.
